Modern Adaptation of Ancient Chinese Medicine (22)

MODERN ADAPTATION of Ancient Chinese Medicine. Chinese medicine has already reached maturity long time ago before the birth of Western medicine. Many ailments nowadays such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, etc. depend on modern scientific instruments and blood tests for detection and monitoring. Does ancient natural healing have a role to play? Can Chinese herbal knowledge be adapted to treat these ailments? The answer is yes of course, if the herbalist knows how. Nature always provides us with the things we need, but it may not be in a simple direct way. This video is an attempt to explain how the adaptation can be done. With the ancient knowledge of herbs, the herbalist must employ good skills and reasoning to make it work in the modern world. This requires an understanding of the nature of the illness, and equally important, the cultural and historical context of Chinese medicine. The following are some illustrations: CHOLESTEROL Cholesterol is a relatively recent discovery by modern scientific methods. This Western name has no equivalent in classical Chinese medicine. The Chinese could not possibly have known that cholesterol existed at that time without the benefit of blood tests. That is why there is no cholesterol herb in the herbal dictionaries, except in rumors or advertising. Has there been any lab test nowadays to confirm a cholesterol herb? The businessman will always say yes but he cannot cite a truly reliable or authoritative source. Since most

Traditional Diabetes Treatment

CHAN:
India has one of the biggest populations of diabetes sufferers, but people there are resorting to a traditional remedy to help treat the disease. Heres a look at the healing power of a honey leaf called stevia.

STORY:
[Amit Yadav, Traditional Indian Medical Practitioner]:
“Diabetic patients can use these leaves as an alternate for sugar. These sweet leaves provide the taste of sugar without increasing the sugar or glucose level in the body. Besides this, these leaves are also good for heart patients as it smoothes the cardiovascular function.”

He also added that since honey leaves contain fewer concentrations of carbohydrate and calories, they are also helpful with obesity and high blood pressure.

Diabetic patients say honey leaves help them control their blood sugar levels.

[Yogendra Pratap Singh, Diabetes Patient]:
“I have tried many medicines for treating diabetics but I was unable to control my blood sugar level. Someone told me about this honey leaf and I started consuming the boiled extract of these leaves. This not only controlled my blood sugar level but also provide relief for my body.”

According to reports, India has around 37 million diabetic patients out of the total 150 million in the world and it is growing rapidly. If nothing is done to reverse the trend then India will become the diabetic capital of the world by 2025 with an estimated 70 million diabetic patients.

[Mahendra Pratap Singh, Honey Leaf Cultivator]:
“The percentage of diabetic patients is increasing day-by-day. Honey leaf is helpful in controlling blood sugar levels and obesity as well. So there is a huge demand for this and we foresee a bright future in honey leaf cultivation. That is why we prefer honey leaf to other crops.”

No one is sure why diabetes is such a severe problem among south Asians, particularly Indians. But experts believe it is ociated with an increasingly less active lifestyle, a carbohydrate-rich diet and maybe even a genetic issue.

Natural Medicine Leads to Real Cures
In contrast, the philosophy of natural medicine holds that a weakened immune system (and/or along with other weakened bodily systems) is the reason foreign invaders can thrive, producing symptoms and diseases.

Most of us are taught that we need to go to medical doctors when we get sick. What we aren’t taught is that the real doctor is already within us as the innate wisdom of the body. This is the difference between conventional allopathic systems and natural holistic medicine systems. The philosophy of natural medicine is that, given the right conditions, the body will heal itself. Whereas the allopathic model tries to control defective body systems through drug intervention, or kill foreign invaders with antibiotics, natural medicine rarely includes toxic agents. Instead, herbs, homeopathic remedies and other non-invasive therapies are used. These techniques harmoniously help facilitate the repair and strengthening of bodily systems (especially the immune system, which can then properly fight foreign invaders), or help to destroy offending pathogens without toxic side effects. The goal of natural medicine is to figure out why systems have weakened and then repair them, which results in healing.

Allopathic Medicine—Symptom/Disease Management
The allopathic medical philosophy taught at most medical schools, and practiced by the majority of medical doctors, relies on the concept of identifying diseases or symptoms, and then prescribing drugs to manage or combat those conditions. It is a system that considers the disease or symptom to be the actual problem, as opposed to addressing the underlying causes that produced the disease or symptom in the first place. A wide variety of tests, procedures and equipment specially designed to identify diseases and symptoms have been developed, which on one level is great, because these tests could be used to help figure out underlying causes. Yet, on another level they are very limiting, since they are rarely used for such purposes. Typically, once a diagnosis is determined, the tests are plunked into the patient’s file as conclusive evidence of his or her condition.
