Kind of depends on how much weight your talking about. But even then, a lot of other factors would have to be taken into account: age, race, exercise habits, and diet. Could it? Possibly, but not necessarily.

Any excess intake of calories and inadequate exercise regimen resulting in weight gain, when combined with a genetic predisposition, can precipitate the onset of type 2 diabetes. Doesn’t matter much what the source of those calories is.
