Traditional Diabetes Treatment

CHAN:
India has one of the biggest populations of diabetes sufferers, but people there are resorting to a traditional remedy to help treat the disease. Heres a look at the healing power of a honey leaf called stevia.

STORY:
[Amit Yadav, Traditional Indian Medical Practitioner]:
“Diabetic patients can use these leaves as an alternate for sugar. These sweet leaves provide the taste of sugar without increasing the sugar or glucose level in the body. Besides this, these leaves are also good for heart patients as it smoothes the cardiovascular function.”

He also added that since honey leaves contain fewer concentrations of carbohydrate and calories, they are also helpful with obesity and high blood pressure.

Diabetic patients say honey leaves help them control their blood sugar levels.

[Yogendra Pratap Singh, Diabetes Patient]:
“I have tried many medicines for treating diabetics but I was unable to control my blood sugar level. Someone told me about this honey leaf and I started consuming the boiled extract of these leaves. This not only controlled my blood sugar level but also provide relief for my body.”

According to reports, India has around 37 million diabetic patients out of the total 150 million in the world and it is growing rapidly. If nothing is done to reverse the trend then India will become the diabetic capital of the world by 2025 with an estimated 70 million diabetic patients.

[Mahendra Pratap Singh, Honey Leaf Cultivator]:
“The percentage of diabetic patients is increasing day-by-day. Honey leaf is helpful in controlling blood sugar levels and obesity as well. So there is a huge demand for this and we foresee a bright future in honey leaf cultivation. That is why we prefer honey leaf to other crops.”

No one is sure why diabetes is such a severe problem among south Asians, particularly Indians. But experts believe it is ociated with an increasingly less active lifestyle, a carbohydrate-rich diet and maybe even a genetic issue.
