Some common causes of diabetic coma

Diabetic coma is a reversible form of coma found in people with diabetes mellitus. It is a medical emergency. In most medical contexts, the term diabetic coma refers to the diagnostically dilemma posed when a physician is confronted with an unconscious patient about whom nothing is known except that he has diabetes.

A diabetic coma is a condition in which a person with diabetes lapses into a coma due to complications relating to diabetes. In most cases, low blood sugar is the primary reason why an otherwise health patient might lapse into a coma as a result of diabetes. However, other conditions, such as ketoacidosis (kEt-O-as-i-’dO-sis) or nonketotic hyperosmolar (non-kE-’tät-ik hahy-per os-moh-ler) coma occur. One should always use blood glucose test meter for knowing blood sugar levels. Because diabetics are frequently at risk for lapsing into an unconscious state, such as a coma, it is important for diabetics to tell their loved ones about their condition. Many diabetics will also have an emergency diabetes test kit on hand so that they can be quickly revived in the event that they lapse into a coma due to low blood sugar levels.

Here are some common causes of diabetic coma:

Hypoglycemia (hahy-poh-glahy-see-mee-uh)

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar levels, especially effects Type 1 diabetics that take insulin syringes in order to control their blood sugar levels. In most cases, one can avoid falling into a low blood sugar coma by simply drinking juice or eating Diabetic Diet foods with carbohydrates at the first sign of low blood sugar levels.

In most cases, diabetics will have low blood sugar levels during sleep, after heavy drinking, after taking medications, diabetic nutritional supplements, or during intense periods of exercise. In order to revive an unconscious hypoglycemic patient, simply inject diabetic strips the individual with glucose in order to elevate the blood sugar back to a normal level.

Ketoacidosis (kEt-O-as-i-’dO-sis) Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs as a result any combination of high blood sugar levels, dehydration, shock and exhaustion. Coma generally occurs after a diabetic is already showing signs of illness, such as vomiting and hyperventilation.

When a patient has early or middle stages of ketoacidosis, he or she will be flushed and have deep, rapid breaths. Once the person lapses into a coma, the breathing will become shallow, the heart rate will increase and the body will become dehydrated. Treatment for ketoacidosis generally involves an intravenous saline drip that includes potassium and other electrolytes that the body needs in order to restore balance.

Nonketotic Hyperosmolar coma (non-kE-’tät-ik hahy-per os-moh-ler)Nonketotic hypersmolar coma is similar to ketoacidosis coma, but is usually accompanied by lethargy rather than signs of a serious illness (such as vomiting). Generally, the condition involves hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) combined with dehydration. Diabetic should use blood sugar meters for testing blood sugar levels. The condition most often occurs in patients that have Type 2 diabetes.Type 2 diabetics often already have signs of dehydration and lethargy, which may make nonketotic hyperosmolar coma difficult to detect before the onset.

Treatment for Nonketotic hyper molar (non-kE-’tät-ik hahy-per os-moh-ler) coma involves a gradual rehydration of the body combined with insulin medications. Use blood glucose monitors and test for Low Blood Sugar and avoid Diabetic Coma.

Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)

Insulin helps to convert glucose into the usable energy units that your cells use for energy. Insulin also helps to store excess glucose in your liver and muscles for later use. When those energy units are stored instead of used, the glucose becomes glycogen. Glycogen becomes fat if it is never used by your muscles and organs.

Some Typical Causes Of Diabetes That You Really Ought To Know

Doctors and scientists learn more about diabetes and its causes daily. Today we know more about this disease and its causes than in the past few decades. In addition to genetic and non controllable situations, we now know that environmental factors also figure into the cause for this disease. What can you do about some of the major causes of diabetes? Can you do anything at all? In this article we will talk about diabetes and some of the causes that you may or may not be able to control.

Even though type 1 is not considered hereditary, if someone in your family has it, you may have a genetic predisposition for the condition. This means that even if your father has type 1 diabetes, you will not automatically develop it yourself. Still though, it does happen from time to time. If someone in your family has Type 1 diabetes, talk to your doctor about what you can do to prevent it from happening to you. While you can’t really fight genetics, it can’t hurt to stay as healthy as possible. Your stress level can also affect whether or not you develop diabetes. It is true! Being under stress continually increases your risk of developing diabetes. So what do you need to do? Take time every day to relax. You can also talk to your doctor for tips on dealing the stress in your life. There are various methods for relieving the different kinds of stressors in life. Keeping calm as much as possible will lower your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Your chances of developing Type 1 diabetes are also affected by your ethnicity. Northern European descendants are at a higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes. It is particularly prevalent in people of Finnish or Sardinian descent. After them on the list of highly vulnerable ethnicities are African American and Hispanic American. Diabetes is relatively rare in people of Asian descent. Sadly, this is one thing you cannot fight against. Changing your ethnicity is not possible, so there is no way to negate that risk factor.

Diabetes can take place from a number of controllable and non-controllable factors. Causes like genetics, gender and heredity are things you cannot do anything about. Other factors, like high blood pressure or diet are things that you can totally manage on your own. One of the most excellent ways to attempt to keep the diabetes causes from getting the better of you is to maintain the best health possible. Each small decision, like what you snack on in the afternoons can be a one of the reasons you may or may not end up with diabetes. Do the best you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle and hopefully you’ll be fine with nothing to stress about.

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times; according to the American Diabetes Association, there are 23.6 million people in the United States who have diabetes. So you might be asking: what are the causes of diabetes?

The answer to that question depends on which type of diabetes you are referring to, because the Causes of Type 1 Diabetes are different from the causes of Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 (previously known as juvenile diabetes) is usually diagnosed in young adults and children. The body does not produce insulin In Type 1 diabetes and insulin is necessary in the conversion of certain foods into energy. By learning to manage their condition, those with Type 1 diabetes can live long, happy, and healthy lives. Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have Type 1.

The majority of cases of diabetes are Type 2. Type 2 diabetes is a by-product of the body not producing the necessary amount of insulin, or the body cells ignoring the insulin all together.

Since Insulin is what allows the blood sugar to be utilized by the cells, it is crucial to the body’s well being. Diabetes complications occur when the blood receives a buildup of glucose or blood sugar.

Environmental factors is one of the causes of diabetes. Did you know that with identical twins, with identical genes, when one twin gets Type 1 diabetes, the other gets the disease only about half the time? When one twin gets Type 2, the other’s risk is only 3 in 4 at most.

One environmental factor that can trigger Type 1 diabetes is viruses. Early diet may also be a trigger. Type 1 is less common in those who were breastfed as babies, and those who were first given solid foods at later ages.

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy, usually about 28 weeks or later. This diagnosis does not mean you had diabetes before your pregnancy or that you will continue to have it after your baby is born. However, it is important to follow your doctor’s advice about blood sugar levels during pregnancy.

Obesity is another big factor in diabetes. Even if you are not obese, losing 5-10 pounds will lower your chances for diabetes, or it will help you manage your diabetes if you have already been diagnosed.

Portion control and what you eat are major factors in helping you to lose weight. Many professionals recommend eating smaller meals and snacks throughout the day instead of having large meals.

This will help in both diabetes and weight loss.

Here Comes A Good Explanation On Causes Of Diabetes

For Type 1 diabetes, the main cause of the problem comes from damaging the pancreas itself. The pancreas is an organ that resides near the stomach and contains cells known as beta cells which are responsible for the production of insulin. This damage may originate from a small glitch in the immune system which may trigger it to attack the beta cells found in the pancreas hence hindering the process of insulin production.

Some Ordinary Causes Of Diabetes

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is on the rise. Look at the people that you socialize with on a regular basis. Diabetes most likely is affecting at least on of them. If not, then there is probably at least one person who knows or is related to someone who has diabetes. It is incredibly common in the western world (and beyond it). Type 1 and Type 2 are the names of the Types of Diabetes. Type 1 diabetics are dependent on insulin. At any point, you can develop type 1 diabetes. Type 2 is also called adult onset diabetes because it occurs during adulthood; those diagnosed with it are not insulin dependent. Some of the major causes of this condition are covered here.

Heavy drinking is strongly discouraged! A leading cause of diabetes is excessive drinking, especially in older men. Alcohol and its empty calories and lots of fat can adversely effect all the different parts of your body. It doesn’t just affect your liver function. Cholesterol levels can be raised as well. It can cause high blood pressure and, if you drink heavily long enough, it can cause diabetes. A glass or two of wine throughout the week is not harmful. Drinking a few hours every night can be very harmful though.

You should seek treament if you have a problem with how much you drink.

Genetics come into play when we speak about Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes can come about for a variety of reasons, although genetics is seemingly the most important factor. If you are the offspring of diabetics, it is more likely you will have to face diabetes, than a person who is not genetically predisposed to it. If your parents or grandparents were in pain with adult onset diabetes, beware! Keep track of your diet and other environmental factors that can increase your chances of getting the disease. You might not be capable of preventing it entirely, though you can definitely fight against it.

You probably know that your diet plays a large role in whether or not you will develop diabetes. If you eat mostly fatty and sugary foods you will be more susceptible to developing diabetes than if you eat a more well rounded and nutritious diet. Soda is the strongest aggressor of this disease. Cutting out soda is thee best dietary change you can make to reduce your risk of diabetes. Cutting out soda will reduce your risk by a third, according to some doctors. Cutting down on potato chips and candy while increasing your fruits and veggies will further reduce your risk. Don’t worry, after a while you won’t miss the unhealthy stuff at all.

Diabetes does not have to control your life, in fact you have control over how much you allow diabetes to invade your life. Even the diabetes causes that once eluded us are common knowledge now. This makes identifying the contributing factors is less difficult. Fortunately there are now many more treatments available for treating it if you do end up with it. The mystery of diabetes has now been primarily solved. It can even be avoided if you know what to look for..
